MIA Limited Edition -Trail

Ciao a tutti!

My fellow Shoe-A-Holics, I recently had the opportunity to witness a time honored tradition of this nations' first peoples; historically a gathering of Native Americans, the 2013 Lowcountry Pow Wow gathered those of Native American heritage (and those of us who aren't) in a serene lakeside setting, once home to the Yemassee tribes people, to partake in great this spectacle of pageantry.

Modern Tepee, complete with fire pit inside,
served as temporary residence for several participants

Inter-tribal Men Dance

This beautiful Squaw (pictured far above lower right, in ceremonial regalia) from the Tribe of the People of the First Light, performed a ceremonial Blanket Dance.
From the men who surrounded her, she would dance then place her blanket before the warrior she wanted to marry;
if he picked up her blanket, they would be wed.

Baci a tutti!

Flashback Friday! Type Z -Sabot, Camel

Ciao a tutti!

The first time I shoe-cased these beauties (here on my trip to Naples), I never really mentioned anything about the shoes; disappointed with all things Napoletano, I neglected how fabulous a pair of mules can be.

The mule, a style of shoe which dates back to the 16th century, is a french word used to describe a shoe of varying heights which is backless and closed-toed.  Once a popular indoor shoe in the 18th century, by the early 20th century, this style of shoe became associated exclusively with prostitutes.  In the 1950's, fashion icon, Marilyn Monroe re-popularized the mule, which has made a resurgence in the world of fashion in subsequent decades, but it wasn't until the 1990's when the mule (or more specifically, the mule's little sister, the open-toed slide) became a staple in woman's footwear.*

I love the versatility of the mule, the easiness of the style, the flirty ankle aspect of it (in warm weather, see pictures below) and the fact I never have to worry about cramped toes, especially in a closed-toed shoe!

How I Styled It?
I am not a fan of the color red (not by any stretch of the imagination), but the jeans were the first choice when I pulled out this Chenille sweater (a gift years ago), because of the fair isle print at the edge and sleeves.  In fact, the entire outfit I pulled from the colors in the sweater: the long sleeve grey t-shirt from Old Navy), my scarf and  bag from an Italian market, and the patterned socks (a gift).  The tan-twill cargo vest, I found on clearance at Old Navy.  The tuxedo jeans are Soho, from DKNY Jeans.

Baci a tutti!

MIA -Eelia

Ciao a tutti!

My fellow Shoe-A-Holics, I am treading lightly into this cold weather as I ease into boot season this year, partly because I still have so many sandals/open-toe shoes left to wear and mainly because It is forecasted to be in the mid-to-upper 70's (23-25 Celsius) this weekend (yes, I have been spoiled by this weather)!

So for my inauguration into one of my two favorite seasons of the year (the other is bikini season), I opted for this cowboy beauties!  I have the boots, and I have the cape...all I need now is the horse!

How I Styled It:
These boots needed the right outfit to go with, so I paired them with this Fur Military Cape from the GAP.  I was hesitant about buying the cape because of the color (slope brown), but every time I photograph myself in it, it looks more like an olive green! Just an aside, the fur collar is removable.  I decided to do something I do not ordinarily do, pair two neutrals (in this case the brown and grey), but I did so, because of the fleece lining inside the cape; although cooler outside, I wasn't sure if I was going to wear the jacket open or closed, and I like the way the stripped lining (which is also removable) co-ordinated with the different shades of grey I wore!  Keeping with the canvas, I matched the outfit with a grey canvas purse (not shown)...I like the idea of matching the textures of the fabric (the canvas cape and bag)!  The leggings are from Forever 21 and the tunic sweater is from an Italian market.  Two more things: the cape has fabulous ruching detail in the back and can be worn two ways: with arms through the buttoned vents in front (pictured left) or traditionally, down the sleeve (see the first picture at the top of the blog post)!  SN

Reflections in Springtime: Type Z -Sabot, Cognac

Buongiorno a tutti!

My mood today is again contemplative.  While yesterday, I thought of yesterdays past, today I am thinking of only today...of how I want to live from this day forward and of all the things I want to do (the list, at least in my head, is lengthy, but I am thankful for the dreams).  I want to live with purpose, and not wander aimlessly like I feel I had in my misspent youth; and I am brought to the words of  Henry David Thoreau whose words from Walden; Life in the Woods so accurately encapsulate my sentiment.  Enjoy!

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartanlike as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion. For most men, it appears to me, are in a strange uncertainty about it, whether it is of the devil or of God, and have somewhat hastily concluded that it is the chief end of man here to 'glorify God and enjoy him forever.
